Today was a day of exploration for sure! This morning we worked really hard to take care of our morning work quickly. We planned to experiment with liquids and solids this afternoon and if we didn't get things taken care of this morning we had to miss out on the fun science activity! It's hard to learn sometimes that WORK comes before PLAY, but the sooner we learn it the better chances we have of being ready for the FOURTH grade so we might as well roll up our sleeves and get busy right!
Our morning work paper reviewed money and making change. A few of us had to have a quick review over borrowing if there were two zeros for us to deal with. This happened with amounts like $5.00 or $3.00. Once we reviewed we were ready to go and ALMOST all of us finished the morning work TODAY!
In reading we read our level reader with a partner, we worked on writing sentences with vocabulary words from our story and some of the kiddos worked with me on their LIVING MUSEUM piece. If your son or daughter brought home a TYPED copy of this today it is so they can be practicing these EVERY night. I want each one of them to have their part MEMORIZED so that they are READY for our museum. We will host this event on Wednesday, March 11th. Hopefully they all have been preparing their COSTUMES so this day doesn't SNEAK up and catch anyone UNPREPARED.
After lunch we listened to Dr. Suess's story about Bartholomew and the Oobleck. We couldn't quite decide from the story if oobleck would be a liquid or a solid so we just had to MAKE some ourselves to see. After making it we ran several TESTS on it to see if it was more like a liquid or more like a solid. Did it conform to a shape? Could we push it around? Were we able to pour it out of our bowl? Let's just say this STUFF is AMAZING! We argued just a bit, because with some of the tests this oobleck stuff acted just like a LIQUID, but for the other tests it made us think it was a SOLID. Each of us brought some home to play with a bit more and hopefully we will all have our minds made up tomorrow for sure! In our story Bartholomew was sure ready for it to go and I have to wonder how many moms and dads will feel the same way in just a few short days!
Tonight they may have to finish:
1. Math morning work
2. Reading blue definition sheet
3. Spelling ABC order page
Our February AR party will be on Friday. For this kids can bring technology. We will have free time, make ice cream sundaes, and show a movie. This means though that a NEW challenge has started so if there's a free night to read it would be a GREAT idea. March will go quickly with spring break and state assessments.
Have a SUPER evening!
If you want to check out the story we read or the oobleck directions, they can be found at the bottom of our calendar site.
I hope to encourage the children in my classroom to love learning the way I do. Through engaging them in meaningful activities I am certain they will develop a curiosity that will spark their imagination and cause them to want discover all they can while in third grade. I hope to be able to share, with those of you at home, everyday what we have accomplished in the classroom! Trust me, we will be doing AMAZING things!
