Today we were super busy! I had to be gone yesterday and Mrs. Zeka was my substitute. She did a GREAT job, so that made today a lot easier for me. I did staple spelling lists in EVERYONE'S agenda today. Our next spelling test will be Friday, October 10th. We also listened to our story, "If You Made a Million" and discussed all of the things a person could buy for ONE MILLION DOLLARS. After much discussion we decided things like candy or even a car are not nearly pricey enough items to purchase if we could only buy ONE thing with our $1,000,000.
We also worked very hard today to get news articles finished up. We have page one of our very first "What's Happening in the Town of Sweets" newsletter ready to go. We plan to finish these and send them home for you all to check out by Thursday of this week. Reporters have to work very hard to do their research, write their articles, find illustrations, and still make their deadline. Hopefully we can ALL make ours!
We began a MONOPOLY game in math today and everyone is keeping their game boards for the ENTIRE week. Sometimes keeping track of things can be tough, so you might remind your kiddo to put it in a SAFE PLACE so that he or she can use it in math ALL week.

The picture above shows our CRAZY HATS OR CRAZY HAIR for spirit week today. Tomorrow is Dr. Seuss Day so kids can dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.
Tomorrow I will also be taking Gavin, Skylie, and Olivia to Big Cheese for lunch! They were our SEPTEMBER "Players of the Week". All three of them have done an AWESOME job this year so CONGRATULATIONS goes out to them!
Tomorrow is also our first AR CELEBRATION! If your child earned this privilege then they can bring a device (Nintendo DS, Gameboy, PSP, Computer, etc.) to school tomorrow with your permission. Our celebration will begin around 1:30. During that time we will eat popcorn, have a movie going, and play on our devices as a REWARD for working hard and getting those 4 AR points. The new challenge started yesterday so EVERYONE needs to try and qualify for that celebration!
Skylie Shore was our Player of the week this week! She always does AMAZING work and I have been super proud of how hard she tries to do everything I ask! Keep up the great work Skylie! Today she brought her American Girl Doll to share with the class. It was a gift she received on her 9th birthday!
Today was a GREAT way to end the week. We started the morning with a field trip to IMPACT BANK where we toured the bank, saw how coins are sorted, learned how the machine gets money from cars in the drive through to employees working in the window, were locked in the safety deposit box vault, and then learned TONS of information about how banking works. The people at Impact were SUPER IMPRESSED with all we are doing in our classroom with money. They loved that we are all practicing with a checkbook! One of them even gave Mrs. Elder and Mrs. Jenkins an idea for how to teach us with our accounts about real life mishaps and real life bonuses. They just may start having us see how something like a birthday or a flat tire change our outlook on a week.
After our tour we had just enough time for a short game in PE and then were able to squeeze in a Spelling test before lunch. After lunch we were HARD at work learning lots about Johnny Appleseed, making apple crisp, and our own Johnny Appleseeds to hang up in our room.
Before we knew it, we had run out of time and our Friday had come and gone! This weekend they ALL do have a progress report to show you. Please sign these and send them back to me on Monday so I know you have all had a chance to see them.
Progress reports and a math morning work paper are the only two things they need to take care of this weekend!

Today was such a GREAT day! I was super proud of the kids as they took over the role of being newspaper reporters! We looked at examples of newspaper articles and wrote one together so they could understand the work that goes with reporting information to a class, city, or state even. After this we brainstormed ALL of the things we have done so far in third grade and then worked in groups to write newspaper articles about them. We will finish these tomorrow and put them into a "Town of Sweets Chronicle" for everyone at home to enjoy. They wrote, edited, rewrote, researched for pictures, and then even typed up their articles today. I think we have some future journalists in the making! They did OUTSTANDING work.
Today was a SUPER day for kids to learn just what Mrs. Jenkins' expects. The members of the Town of Sweets have had a hard time always putting forth their BEST effort. Today we had our first official "CLASS MEETING" and we talked during that meeting about what each and every one of us need to be doing or at least trying to do when we come to school. I am in the middle of reading, "Third Grade Angels" to them and in that story Mrs. Simms looks for third graders who are worthy of earning a halo from her. Today in the Town of Sweets we discussed just what Mrs. Simms was looking for and just what kind of student she was hoping her kiddos would become throughout their year in third grade. I am REALLY hoping some of the GREAT ideas and lessons they all shared will begin to show up in our room. I believe they each know the importance of coming to school to learn, but I also think they get caught up very quickly in the social part of being with their friends. Now, please don't think that I don't want school and the Town of Sweets to be a FUN place because I am the first that wants this to happen for your children. I do however, also want them each to reach their full potential and for them to do this we ALL need to be putting forth our BEST effort. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that I get to be a part of their day and their education. I work hard to provide lots of learning experiences for them and today shared with them how they can also add to this experience and what they can do to help themselves along the way. We spent some time discussing the difference between "GETTING" a reward and "EARNING" a reward. After our class meeting they all agreed that they would rather REALLY WORK HARD to EARN something rather then just to GET it. We have set a goal of 100%'s on tests and homework right now so they ALL agreed to step their game up just a little. This might mean something as little as double checking their work before handing it in or making sure ALL answers are completed before handing something in. Little steps are the first way towards reaching a goal. Please be encouraging if they bring something home and ask you to check it over for them or if they ask you to listen to them read. They are ALL wanting to do their VERY BEST!

Take a minute to ask them how they did on the selection test they took today over "Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday". Remember this is the story we have been working with for the past two weeks. They have read it, had it read to them, listened to it on the computer, made a wallet to go along with it, made dominos for vocabulary practice, played vocabulary concentration, and done several pages to practice with sequencing and with the story. They are also ENCOURAGED to use their reading book while they work on the selection test. I am pretty sure most of them thought they could have done a little better on the test during our CLASS MEETING, but I would be curious as to how they tell you they felt they did.

I am SUPER excited to announce that the kids are doing a GREAT job at solving my mysteries. I have given them several attempts at different problem solving mysteries to solve and 8 groups today were able to complete the puzzle. They were all given clues to help them. The clues consist of things like, "there are six coins in my set" and "it takes 100 of the minimum coin in my set to have $1.00". Today they had a total of six clues and they had to figure out what coins were in my set and how much money the coins were worth. One pair of kiddos had it correctly solved in the first five minutes. Their problem solving strategies are getting better EVERY day!
We also spent a lot of time getting ready for our selection test over the story, "Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday". We have read the story, listened to the story, and have done a lot of activities with the story so I am hoping for OUTSTANDING selection test scores TOMORROW. They may want to listen to it one more time this evening or even go through their class wallet to retell the story as another way to review what happened to Alexander.
In math we are working hard on FACT FAMILIES and were excited to see today how solving basic math fact problems can help us with more difficult ones. Math centers were busy, busy, busy and that time seemed to FLY by!

Well, it was another busy day full of LOTS of learning! Remember on Monday we do have Ms. Greer with exploration place helping us with a science lesson! She had us start an experiment with apples today and taught us about "CONTROL GROUPS" and "EXPERIMENT GROUPS". Our experiments have been set up in our room so that we can watch them throughout the week and see how our "VARIABLE" changes our apples. We also have PE and Library Skills on Mondays so we are in and out of our room several times. We did get our Math Chapter One tests back so mom and dad can take a look at those. We started Chapter Two and looked at fact triangles and even did a little shopping from a Dillons Ad. We are continuing with our story, "Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday" and we all have a wallet to help us retell the story to someone at home tonight. Selection Tests over the story will be on Wednesday this week.

This week our "PLAYER OF THE WEEK" was Olivia! She has done a great job this year! She is a super kid who always is doing her best to make the Town of Sweets the best place possible. She also has been our town vet this month and our frog, Bobo, is LOVING the special treatment Olivia gives him. Today Olivia brought a Raggedy Ann doll to share with our class. After she told us all about HER doll we talked about other things some of us have that are passed down from generation to generation. I was impressed with the things the kids have saved and even the ideas some of them have about what they want to save to pass down to their own children some day.
We finished our story, "How to be Perfect in Just Three Days" and we were all glad to learn that NO ONE is perfect. Making mistakes, trying new things, and taking risks are all part of LEARNING. We decided a world full of ONLY perfect people might even get kind of boring after awhile. Milo taught us a lot of really GREAT lessons. We learned the importance of patience, the importance of accepting everyone, and the importance of being ourselves. Dr. Silverfish also has a book out about how to earn a million dollars in just four days, but we aren't so sure about his plans anymore! What sounds like a SUPER plan may not end up being what we thought it would.
Math tests were a big success. Everyone finished them up and not one person said "I CAN'T" during the test. Everyone tried their very hardest. I will get those graded this weekend and the kids will bring them home on Monday. Also on Monday I will send home progress reports so you at home can see how all those graded papers are stacking up. I can't believe it is already time for those! I guess you know what they say... "TIME SURE DOES FLY WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN!"

*ALMOST everyone completed all of this at school so I did ask that they read for 15 minutes two different times this weekend!
WOW! What a day! I think the kids are beginning to see why it is important to work on things when we are working on them in class rather then spending their time talking to their table groups. Some of them have LOTS to finish tonight because they had a hard time staying on task today at school.
We started the morning with a page using our story. They had to find the sentences I had selected from the story and record the page number on the paper. It was a LOCATING SENTENCE activity. No one really should have had to take this home. ALMOST all of them were able to finish it up at school.
Next, we went straight into our reading centers. One center they worked with me on their fluency. It is improving all the time! The baseball reading group is going to try it again tonight at home to see if they can beat our score at school. They will need someone to set a timer for them for ONE MINUTE! Good Luck Readers! At another center they were working on sequencing playing "READING RING". All of them did a GREAT job at this. The last center they were working at their seat on a ladder write activity practicing with their spelling words.
In the middle of centers we did take a break for pictures! They ALL looked soooo nice and everyone smiled for their picture! They should turn out GREAT!
After lunch, we read some more about being a PERFECT PERSON. Boy day two's task was going with NO FOOD! The kids thought that would be really hard and they all agreed that after hearing about Milo's adventure they should be happy with their supper and never complain about it.
We finished the day with a short lesson over the constitution and math centers. Again, it was a SUPER BUSY day and I really feel like they should not have more then 3 things to finish up at home. If you are seeing lots coming home, remind your child to use their time at school wisely. I am doing a lot of redirecting and reminding to try and help them finish things up here.

*Tonight's PUZZLER: If I left for my vacation destination at 8:15 am and arrived at the resort at 5:10 pm, how long did it take me to get there? I will have a surprise at school tomorrow for ALL kiddos who can write the correct answer to this puzzler in their agenda.

Well, the day came and went again FASTER then I wanted or needed it to! We are working soooo hard to get everything done that we need to in a day! We began our morning with our MATH MAPS test in the library with Mrs. Shenk-Lara. Again, this is an assessment so I can see where each of my kiddos are and can plan for a successful year for each of them. There were 53 QUESTIONS on the test so everyone worked hard to do their best!
After maps we put together our vocabulary dominoes going over the vocabulary words for the week. They do have a reading workbook page over these words so if they are finishing it up at home you might ask them to show you their family times page or their reading notebook. Both of those things are GREAT resources to use on that workbook page.
This afternoon we started a new story, "How to be a Perfect Person in Three Days". If your child asks for a piece of broccoli tonight, don't be alarmed they are simply trying to carry out step one of the perfect person plan.
Next, we worked on math and boy oh boy can elapsed time be TRICKY! Wow! The problems we worked today made us ALL think. At home anytime you can have your child read an analog clock for you I would appreciate the extra practice it would give them. It is pretty easy to rely on the digital way in this day and age, but trust me, at school we are practicing with an analog clock lots of times every day! We are even figuring how many hours we are here each day! Kinda tough but we are getting it!
Mr. Adams ended the day with an assembly about a chocolate bar fundraiser. Each kiddo was given a packet with all of the information to show you at home. If they participate in the fundraiser I do need the signed permission slip brought back to school. Once I have that I will send home their first box of chocolate to sell. Each chocolate bar sells for $1 and the money will be used for lots of things here at Eisenhower. Please look over the information with them! Mrs. Elder and I have talked and if the third graders sell MORE chocolate bars then any other grade here at Ike we will take them ALL to Braum's for some ice cream! Happy Selling!

We had a SUPER DAY TODAY! We managed to finish things up from yesterday and get through just ABOUT almost everything on my list for today! This morning the kids took their READING MAPS test. This will let me share with you what they know and show me what specific areas I really need to concentrate on when planning my lessons for them. We also listened to our story again and completed a sentence strip activity to go along with it. I gave them back their spelling pretests and stapled a new list in their agenda so that they can be studying their new words. The next spelling test will be on SEPTEMBER 26th. After that we finished up our story from story time so they all have a chance to take an AR TEST over that book if they choose.
In math today I challenged them again with a get it together activity over landmarks. They went back to work as detectives and today THREE teams were able to SOLVE the mystery and figure out the data set I was thinking of. I NEVER heard the words "I CAN'T" today and EVERYONE worked extremely hard to solve the mystery! I was SUPER DUPER PROUD of all of them.
Since they did such an AMAZING job I gave them a PUZZLER to try. Only one table group solved it so far so take a look at it and see if you at home can help them solve it tonight! You will need 8 pennies! It is called the CLASSIC DEXTER! You need to start by lining up 8 pennies in a straight row. Next try to TRANSFORM these 8 pennies into four stacks of two coins each. HERE IS THE GAME'S ONLY RULE: On each move you many take a SINGLE PENNY and "jump over" exactly 2 pennies and land on the next SINGLE penny. The 2 jumped over may be two single pennies side by side, or one stacked pair of pennies. YOU ALSO CAN ONLY MAKE FOUR TOTAL MOVES TO DO THIS! Good luck! I told the kids today that if they could show me how to do this in the morning they can earn $1 and a treat from our candy basket! Have fun and please DON'T SAY "I CAN'T" while you are helping them find a solution.

I hope to encourage the children in my classroom to love learning the way I do. Through engaging them in meaningful activities I am certain they will develop a curiosity that will spark their imagination and cause them to want discover all they can while in third grade. I hope to be able to share, with those of you at home, everyday what we have accomplished in the classroom! Trust me, we will be doing AMAZING things!
