After morning work was finished, we played a few games of SPELLING BINGO and then went straight in to writing a rough draft over Gertrude Ederle. Each one of them will be writing their own paragraphs over their famous athletes so before they started on those I wanted to write a practice one with them so that they would understand how to set these up. Our sample paragraphs went something like this:
A little about Gertrude Ederle.
The facts tell us that Gertrude was the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel. When doing this she beat the men's record by almost two hours. Fans held a parade for her after she did this. Gertrude also won three gold medals in the Olympics. People still remember her for her accomplishments.
I chose to make my pop bottle person Gertrude Ederle because she inspires me to swim. She never gave up on her dream, even after she failed the first time. She taught us that women can do what men can and that they should be treated equally. I admire most her bravery.
Some of the kiddos need to finish these tonight so the example may help you at home see what the goal of the paragraphs are. The first paragraph should be facts about their athlete and then the second paragraph should be their opinion of the athlete.
After some time to work on rough drafts of their own athletes, we reread the story so we could ALL be ready for the selection test tomorrow. Not many of us have scored 100%'s on these this year so we are working towards a CLASS RECESS and-or a trip to BRAUMS if enough of us are able to do this tomorrow. It might be a good idea to listen to the story again and then to go through the questions on the jeopardy game I posted so that EVERYONE is ready for the test!
In math we worked on learning lots about SYMMETRY and more on POLYGONS! We played games from learningplanet.com or went to adapted mind at the computer. We worked on angles and geometry review at my center and then at the PROBLEM SOLVING center everyone was using pattern blocks to build a few SYMMETRICAL shapes!
Tonight at home they may need to finish:
1. A polygon morning work page
2. Journal page
3. A pink lesson 6-9 sheet
4. A unit 19 spelling page
5. Finish rough drafts over famous athletes
Have a SUPER evening!
